The underlying idea was that what women do is somehow less important and not to be taken seriously. If a man were to put a urinal in a gallery (like Marcel Duchamp), it was “art,” and if a woman painted a beautiful landscape it was “cute.” It was difficult for women artists to get gallery representation.

No, this is not a motorcycle related artist, but as you know, I am a professor of fine arts and Maggie Taylor is someone whose work I have always enjoyed. Her husband is no slouch either, and those of you into the arts probably know of him, Jerry Uelsmann. Once I was at a Society for Photographic Education conference and we were all hailing Jerry as a fine academic, when he started to speak about his wife. He said, “Maggie is such a smart woman. She reads a lot of books. Some of them are even hardback.”

Well, I thought it was pretty funny. The new exhibit of Maggie’s work is going to be a crowd pleaser. I wouldn’t be surprised to see her images ending up as tattoos in the not too distant future.

Check it out and if you talk to Maggie, tell her ArtBiker says “Hello.”

Love, Respect, and Fine Art,

ArtBiker

Think…wood, twigs, moss, dried flowers, mushrooms, things made from other materials. ….Tiger-lilies, rose bushes, daisy beds, Weeping Willow and Violets, mushrooms…maybe with faces? Live plants may be used but must not require a lot of care. You may come in and care for the plant while it is on display. The museum does not use fluorescent lighting and there are no windows in the gallery areas where the plants may be placed. Pieces will be on display up to 4 weeks.

Awards and Recognition:

People’s Choice winner – $100 (votes counted April 17th)
