White Mountain Artists

1840-1940

February 10 – April 1

The Florida Museum for Women Artists is pleased to present the historically significant White Mountain Women (1840-1940), on display from February 11, 2012 through April 1, 2012.

The exhibit will feature an assortment of works from the private collections of Frances “Dolly” MacIntyre and Sheila W. and Samuel M. Robbins.

Despite social and environmental barriers, women artists started painting in the White Mountains as early as the 1830s; some of the initial White Mountain artists were associated with the Hudson River School. At this time, it was rare for a woman to paint anything other than portraiture or still life, as women were expected to reside mostly in the home. Stepping out into a vast, rustic landscape, women conquered and appreciated the wonders of nature while steadfastly securing their place in history among the prodigious artists of the White Mountains. In keeping with the museum’s mission to identify and promote women in the arts, the Florida Museum for Women Artists is proud to shine light on the great women artists of the White Mountains.

An opening reception will be held on February 10, 2012 from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.. The event will include light fare. The cost is free for members and $10 for non-members, including museum admission.
