The exhibition Illustrating Orchids at the Florida Museum for Women Artists presents 80 works by two botanical illustrators whose work is the epitome, not only of scientific illustration, but also of the creative perfection that makes these works great art. Blanche Ames Ames (1878 – 1969) and Marion Ruff Sheehan (1924 – 1998) used their extensive artistic abilities to document the form and structure of numerous orchid genera. With ink and graphite drawings and detailed watercolor paintings, the artists made precise renderings of the dissected orchids before them. Collaborating with their husbands – Dr. Oakes Ames of Harvard and Dr. Thomas Sheehan of the University of Florida who are prominent scholars of orchid study – they continued and extended the standard for the technical rendering of flower and plant structure that defines each genus and species.

The underlying idea was that what women do is somehow less important and not to be taken seriously. If a man were to put a urinal in a gallery (like Marcel Duchamp), it was “art,” and if a woman painted a beautiful landscape it was “cute.” It was difficult for women artists to get gallery representation.
