White Mountain Artists

(1840-1940)

New Forest Estate Stamped, Anne Richard Brewster

February 11, 2012- April 1, 2012

This historically significant exhibit will feature an assortment of works from the private collection of Frances “Dolly” MacIntyre.

Despite social and environmental barriers, women artists started painting in the White Mountains as early as the 1830s; some of the initial White Mountain artists were associated with the Hudson River School. At that time, it was rare for a woman to paint anything other than portraiture or still life, as they were expected to reside mostly in the home. Stepping out into the vast, rustic landscape, women conquered and appreciated the wonders of nature, while steadfastly securing their place in history among the prodigious artists of the White Mountains. Meet the collector, Frances “Dolly” MacIntyre at the opening reception February 10, 2012 from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. The event will include light fare, and drinks will be for sale. The cost is free for members and $10 for non-members to attend the opening reception.

Dorothy Johnson “Mother Art” 1923-2012

Dorothy Johnson, long time arts patron, advocate, educator, and loving mother and grandmother passed away on January 3, 2012 due to heart complications. Johnson was 89 years old.

Johnson impacted education through the arts locally and at the state level with her long standing tenure as Volusia County Schools first Art Supervisor as well as in her early role as the first Director for the DeLand Children’s Museum now the Museum of Florida Art. Dorothy is fondly called “Mother Art” by her teachers and artists she worked with in school across the county. As Art Supervisor in Volusia Schools she developed a long standing Artist in Residency program (1974-1988) a nationally model funded by the National Endowment for the Arts and Volusia Schools. In many ways this program shaped the broader cultural community and promoted Volusia’s artists. In this program, Johnson provided a catalyst for artists to work with teachers, students and the community to integrate the arts into the fabric of education in Volusia. She created the first countywide art education called Volusia Students Create, celebrating student excellence in the visual arts now an annual point of pride for the school district.

Dorothy Johnson resided the majority of her life in DeLand and was active in fundraising efforts for the arts. She served as 2004 Queen of the Krewe of Amalee, a women’s charitable social club supporting the arts and community programs.

In her career, she was involved in state arts advancements serving on the State of Florida’s first cultural planning team, the Florida Arts Leadership Congress creating the State’s inaugural cultural plan. She has served as President of the Florida Alliance for Arts Education and the Florida Art Education Association and as the Florida representative to the American Craft Council.

The Museum of Florida Art named a gallery in her honor in 2007 and the Florida Museum for Women Artists also named a gallery for her in 2010.

Johnson was the 2011 recipient for the Tippen Davidson Award for the Arts for her outstanding achievements in advancing the arts and arts education in Volusia County.

Dorothy Johnson was the loving wife of Everette W. Johnson for 53 years, who passed in 2000. Dorothy was born in Racine, Wisconsin on March 2, 1922 to parents Lillian and Martin Peterson and grew up with her two sisters, Millie and Georgia. She is survived by her son, Bill Johnson and his wife, Mary of Mt. Dora, Florida and her grandchildren Brian (and fiancé Mariel Colon-Paris) of Orlando; Kevin (and wife Diana) of Gainesville, Fl, as well as her daughter, Anne and husband Robert Jarmuz of Pleasanton, CA and her grandchildren, Craig and wife Anne, currently living in Dubai, UAE; Kyle Jarmuz and Kurt Jarmuz of Pleasanton as well as her friend and companion, Cholly Capps.

The funeral will be held Saturday, January 7, 2011 at First Presbyterian Church in DeLand at 2:00 pm with a reception immediately following at the Museum of Florida Art. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Museum of Florida Art’s children’s program and the Stetson Children’s Choir.

FMWA invites you to “wine-d” down from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 11th.

Surround yourself with good company, and great art; there’s no better way to unwind during the middle of the hectic workweek.

Complimentary hors d’ouevres will be provided. Wine will be available for a donation. Regular museum admission of $5 applies, and members always get in FREE.

POLAROID IMAGE TRANSFER WORKSHOP
Saturday, January 7, 2012
1:00 p.m. – 3 p.m.
Learn about the art of Polaroid Image Transfer from artist Anna Tomczak. Attendees will not only learn the process Anna uses in her creative work but will also have an opportunity to make images through a similar process to take home and continue on their own.

This hands on class is available to museum members for $25 per person/$35 for non-members, including museum admission.

CITRUS GOLD

Friday, February 3
10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

University of Florida IFAS and the Volusia County Extension partner with Florida Agriculture in the Classroom, Inc. to present Citrus: Florida’s Gold. The program will feature citrus recipes, household uses, nutritional information, and fun factoids about Florida’s wonderful resource. Free for members, $5 donation for non-members.

EDIBLE VALENTINE’S

Saturday, February 11

10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
Surprise your Valentine this year with a delicious edible valentine. FMWA Executive Director and former owner of Crystal Cooks for You, Crystal Recktenwald, will present a culinary arts workshop and create two simple to prepare and delicious treats. Learn how to make homemade heart-shaped marhsmallows as well as a decadent chocolate torte. Recipes and tasting will be provided to all participants. $5 for members, $10 for non-members including museum admission.

EMBOSSED NOTECARDS

Saturday, February 18

10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

Create stationary that’s just your style. Make customized holiday cards for any occasion or create a special way to say “thank you” to your friends and family with custom thank you notes! Each person will be able to create a set of 6 individulized cards. Participants will use tools like rubber stamps, heat guns and embossing powders to create their unique designs and all marterials will be provided. The workshop is only $10 for members and $15 for non-members, including materials and museum admission.

FMWA Incubator – Start your business in one of the most prestigious locations. Those interested in building an art related business are encouraged to contact the museum. You will be able to tour the available professional spaces as well as retail gallery space on the ground floor. Business spaces vary in size and estimated from 100 to 400 square feet. Acceptable businesses would cover all the traditional visual art forms, but would also include such areas as: web design, animation, video art, custom framing, writing, audio recording, or business consulting. Tenant members agree to share managing the space for public accessibility; and providing presentations of their work to the public when appropriate.

Downtown DeLand’s 4th Friday Art Walk
Friday, January 27, 2012 (6:00pm – 9:00pm)
Merchants, restaurants and art galleries in historic Downtown DeLand, Florida host a monthly art walk each 4th Friday. Visitors may stroll the boulevard, enjoy dinner at one of DeLand’s fine restaurants and meet other patrons while viewing the artwork of local artists. Patrons may choose their own route, but we suggest starting at the Florida Museum for Women Artists, which is centrally located. The 4th Friday Art Walk also coincides with the Artisan Alley 4th Friday event which is hosted by The Nest. Artisan Alley is located just west of the Florida Museum for Women Artists (Corner of Woodland Blvd. & New York Ave.) and across the street from Chess Park. The Florida Museum for Women Artist is open 11am to 7pm each Friday.

A Note from the Executive Director

At the close of each year, we should all take a minute to reflect on our accomplishments. The Florida Museum for Women Artists recently did that at our annual meeting. At the meeting, we reminded members about the fantastic exhibits and programming we offered in 2011. Some of those exhibits include: Ovation Series: Dorothy Gillespie, Through the Eye of the Collector, Witness to Creativity II, and the 2nd Annual Juried Show. Each show was unique, giving visitors diverse exposure to women in the arts. Our programming encompassed literary and culinary arts, reminding us that art is takes a variety of forms.

I hope that you were able to participate in some of these workshops, lectures and exhibits at the museum. If not, there is still time to visit this month and see what you have been missing! Look for more wonderful exhibits and programming in 2012.

We have been very busy here at the Florida Museum for Women Artists. The 2nd Annual Juried Exhibit is about to close and it will finish in grand style with our Founders’ Dinner on Thursday, November 10th. Please join us for an evening of fun, food, fundraising and an appreciation for the arts. Tickets are available by calling the museum.

The following week we will prepare for our final exhibit of 2011; Al Sol: Photographs from Mexico, Cameroon and Nicaragua by Stella Johnson. I hope to see you at the Opening Reception from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. on Friday, November 18th.

Stella Johnson is both a passionate photographer and compassionate observer of simple rural life in Africa and Central America. Living with the people that she photographs, Johnson is able to cross the line to capture the many beautiful and intimate moments that make up ordinary situations; moments that allow us inside the lives of the people and of daily village life. Complex, layered and eloquent portraits rendered in a sumptuous palette of black and white bring us a life-affirming sense of joy and wonder at so many of life”s simple experiences. Love, family, dignity, community and respect ring through her luminous images. Johnson is the recipient of multiple scholarships and significant foundation grants. She has worked on assignments for major organizations.

My first month with the Florida Museum for Women Artists has gone by so quickly! I have met so many wonderful people. We have such passion for the arts in DeLand.

The 2nd Annual Juried Exhibit opened in September and it has gotten such great feedback we will be extending it until November 12th. If you haven’t had the chance to come see it, I hope you will come by and hear from some of the artists themselves on Saturday, November 12th.

Fine Art Crafts by Comtemporary Craftswomen. November 18, 2011- January 15, 2012

This is a show of fine gifts by comtemporary Florida Craftswomen in the Lee Gallery of the Florida Museum for Women Artists. The Lee Gallery will be transformed into an interactive installation of purcahseable fine art crafts for gifts or self, created by women artisans. When a fine craft ius sold the installation inventory will be replenished by the museum staff. The installation is a structure in which your art will be placed on display and for sale.

Merchants, restaurants, and art galleries in historic Downtown DeLand, Florida host a monthly art walk each 4th Friday. Visitors may stroll the boulevard, enjoy dinner at one of DeLand’s fine restaurants, and meet other patrons while viewing the artwork of local artists. Patrons may choose their own route, but we suggest starting at the Florida Museum for Women Artists, which is centrally located. The 4th Friday Art Walk also coincides with the Artisan Alley 4th Friday event which is hosted by The Nest. Artisan Alley is located just west of the Florida Museum for Women Artists (Corner of Woodland Blvd. & New York Ave.) and across the street from Chess Park. The Florida Museum for Women Artist is open 11am to 7pm each Friday.

Watching art being made can be very inspiring. It allows the viewer to see the process in action instead of just the finished product. Such an opportunity begins on Friday, July 15th. Eleven art installations will be in-process through the weekend culminating in an exhibition that will remain in place until the first week of September. The public can engage the artists about their projects, work methods and messages. There will be an interesting mix between artists and visitors which is a great way to have art understood. Dialogue about a conceptual work while it is being made actually becomes part of the work. We will be documenting and posting on our website and Facebook daily progress

Exhibit Walkthrough with Jill Cannady –

Through the Collector’s Eyes

Artist Jill Cannady will lead a walkthrough discussing specific aspects of the works included in current exhibition, “Through the Collector’s Eyes”. Cannady’s works are included in the permanent collections of The Brooklyn Museum, Norton Museum of Art, The Lowe Art Museum, Museum of Art, Ft. Lauderdale; and others. She recently completed the 25 foot mural in DeLand’s new chess park, and a portrait of Dean Emeritus of the School of Music, Stetson University. She is the recipient of five State of Florida Fellowship Awards as well as an award for sculpture from the National Endowment for the Arts/Southern Arts Federation. Her degrees in art were earned at Cranbrook Academy of Art and Bowling Green State University, Ohio. In Miami, she is represented by Bernice Steinbaum Gallery. Her works can also be seen at Arts on Douglas in New Smyrna Beach. Arrive early to preview the collections and enjoy a light reception.

Through the Collector’s Eyes
On Exhibit until July 10, 2011

Five collectors who call Florida home share art from their collections in “Through the Collector’s Eyes”, currently on exhibit through July 10, 2011. The selected art from the collections of Charlotte Everbach, Ed and Jean Harris, Margery Pabst, Linda Pinto, and Judy Thompson gives insight, not so much into the qualities of what defines “fine art”, but more into what type of art stirs their soul, brings them joy, and subsequently became a part of their daily living environments.

This show is packed with variety and includes paintings, mixed media, graphite drawing, photography, encaustic and sculpture out of wood, clay, glass and other objects. In addition to the pieces from the collections the artists have been invited to exhibit new works for the public’s enjoyment and consideration.

CALL TO WOMEN ARTISTS

The Florida Museum for Women Artists Museum Shop is now accepting women artists in all media to sell their work on consignment. Items must be hand crafted and will be accepted based on space availability, regional representation, quality and mission consistency. To submit your work for consideration, please complete the application from link below. You will be contacted via email for more information prior to the next selection. At that time you will be asked to send 3 to 5 photos for review (jpg, tiff), price ranges, and dimensions. For consideration, please complete the online submission form. ONLINE FORM .

Through the Collector’s Eyes
On Exhibit until July 10, 2011

The exhibit includes a work by Helen Frankenthaler, who was one of the originators of colour-field theory used in abstract painting, and paintings, prints and sculptures by Doris Leeper who is credited as the founder and visionary of Atlantic Center for the Arts, an internationally recognized arts facility located in New Smyrna Beach.

Other powerhouse artists in this show are found in many major collections and are consistent award winners. They are: Beryl Bayer, Carol Bechtel, Jagoda Buic, Donne Bitner, Jill Cannady, Mindy Colton, Rainee Demmitt, Bethanne Hill, Carol Fitzsimmons, Rene Guerin, Melissa Hosfelt Mason, Shelley Muzylowski Allen, Mary Proctor, Trish Thompson, Barbara Tiffany, Anna Tomczak, Jeanne Schubert, and Barbara Sorensen.

On collecting: You can spend as little or as much as you like on art. You can find art in fine galleries, artists’ studios, and art festivals. The places are endless but you have to be watching and know what you like. These five collectors offer a bit of “advice” on collecting art in their comments which follow:

“My advice to collectors is LOOK, LOOK, and LOOK AGAIN. Look at art festivals, museum openings, gallery openings and when you take a trip LOOK AT ART on your vacations. LISTEN to artists, lectures, television coverage of art events. It will enrich your life and enrich your collecting experience immeasurably.”

“Collecting art is serious fun. Serious, because of what it adds to our lives and brings inside our home – peace, joy, mystery, creativity, energy. You should experience art, talk with people who collect art if you like, but understand that this journey is yours to take. It is as creative a journey as those the artists take when making art..“

“When I look at a piece of art, it provides me with memory and legacy of the time when I first met the artist. I love thinking about the context in which the painting was made and the moment I saw it and bought it!” So my advice is “Buy what touches your heart and provides meaning, memory, and resonance for you.”

“Buy what you like. Be aware of why you like or dislike something so you learn from that evaluation process. You might consider a focus or theme for acquisitions. Attend lots of exhibitions at museums to educate your eye on the variety of art and the quality of work that is available.”

“My rules of thumb are: 1) never pass up an opportunity to see art, whether in a museum, someone’s home, a gallery; or an art show 2) buy only what you love; and 3) display it where you can enjoy it every day.”

Downtown DeLand’s 4th Friday Art Walk
Friday, June 24, 2011 (6:00pm – 9:00pm)
Merchants, restaurants, and art galleries in historic Downtown DeLand, Florida host a monthly art walk each 4th Friday. Visitors may stroll the Boulevard, enjoy dinner at one of DeLand’s fine restaurants, and meet other patrons while viewing the artwork of local artists. Patrons may choose their own route, but we suggest starting at the Florida Museum for Women Artists, which is centrally located. The 4th Friday Art Walk also coincides with the Artisan Alley 4th Friday event which is hosted by The Nest. Artisan Alley is located just west of the Florida Museum for Women Artists (Corner of Woodland Blvd. & New York Ave.) and across the street from Chess Park. The Florida Museum for Women Artist is open 11am to 7pm each Friday.
